Luisa Duarte: Urban Sentinels

Rice University, in collaboration with Piper Faust Public Art and TXRX Labs, presents Urban Sentinels, a new site-specific installation by Houston-based artist Luisa Duarte, recipient of the Eye on Art Grant.

The project marks Duarte’s transition from two-dimensional geometric abstraction to spatial form, expanding her visual language into sculptural structures she calls “sentinels.”

Installed within the Ion’s large window facing Fannin Street, these chromatic forms inhabit the boundary between public and private space. They serve as quiet observers—guardians of reflection rather than defense.

Rooted in architectural rigor and intuitive color, Urban Sentinels explores stillness within urban movement. The installation includes a green-painted mural evoking urban vegetation, a suspended mobile referencing the city’s clouds, and projection mapping that animates the sculptures at night.

“These sentinels do not guard against harm; they guard possibility,” Duarte writes. “They defend imagination and open space for poetic presence.”

Urban Sentinels was realized in collaboration with Piper Faust (Piper Faust Public Art), Larry Ciscon, Alex Eason, and Tommy Joe (TXRX), Maria Eleanora Rodriguez, Carolina Otero, and Lorena Morales.
