MARIANA COPELLO and Luisa Duarte: GEOMETRICAS
Curator: Katherine Chacón.
Centro Imago, Miami, Florida.
September 14, 2024 through – January, 2025.
This exhibition brings together the work of two Venezuelan creators whose practices coincide in the use of geometry. Born in Caracas and established in Maracaibo—the second most important city in Venezuela—both continued their careers in Houston, Texas, where they have made significant contributions to the artistic scene. Although his works address various formal problems and arise from different reflections, the imprint of the broad Venezuelan abstract-geometric tradition remains a pivot and inspiration for both artists.
Mariana Copello is a Venezuelan-born visual artist currently based in Houston, Texas. She grew up in Maracaibo, the capital of Zulia state, where she earned a degree in Advertising and Public Relations from the Universidad del Zulia. Early in her career, she worked at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo del Zulia (MACZUL).
In 2011, Copello moved to Houston, where she began formal training as a sculptor, completing the BLOCK advanced study program (2018-2019) at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's Glassell School of Art. That same year, her work was selected to be part of the Latin American Experience, a biennial event organized by the Department of Latin American Art and the International Center for the Arts of the Americas (ICAA) at the MFAH. Since then, she has been actively involved in both national and international art scenes, participating in numerous exhibitions across the United States and globally.
Copello's practice encompasses sculptures, installations, and works on paper. Her works are held in collections across Latin America, Europe, Australia, and the United States, with her sculptures prominently displayed in public spaces in Houston.
Luisa Duarte
(Caracas, 1959)
Is a Venezuelan American multidisciplinary artist based in Houston, Texas. With a B.A. in Architecture, her work is deeply informed by architectural sensibilities, which are evident across her diverse body of work. Since relocating to the United States in 2003, Duarte has pursued independent art studies at various institutions, including The Southwest School of Arts in San Antonio, the Glassell School of Art, Art League Houston, and the Watercolor Art Society of Houston.
Duarte has gained recognition for her distinct style, characterized by sharp-edged shapes and a dynamic range that spans composed monotypes to vibrant paintings. Her art thoughtfully explores themes of boundaries, fragility, and the interplay between personal and public spaces.
She has held residencies at the Asia Society Texas Center and P.A.C. Art Residency, and is currently a member of the Throughline Collective in Houston. In 2019 Duarte was honored with the 2019 “Cities Initiative Grant” through the Houston Arts Alliance. In 2022, she was featured in the exhibition “Texas Artists: Women of Abstraction” at the Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi.
